“This nation’s economy was built largely on black farmer labor in bondage for hundreds of years. After the Civil War, freed slaves were promised ’40 acres and a mule,’ so they could be self-sufficient as farmers.

But that promise was broken. And what followed was sharecropping and tenant farming. To this day, black farmers are still waiting for their 40 acres and a mule.”
